With so few black designers in the industry, it's no wonder that nobody seems to care about them.
Several reasons may contribute, including a lack of representation of Black designers within the fashion industry, and a lack of opportunities or platform to showcase their work. However, some Black designers have been able to break through and achieve success in haute couture.
One example is Dapper Dan, who became famous for his luxurious custom-made clothing for celebrities and high-profile clients in the 1980s. In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in Black designers and haute couture houses have begun to take notice. Some notable Black designers who have been showcased include LaQuan Smith, Virgil Abloh, Hanifa and more.
Although design industry has become more diverse and inclusive, but black designers are often overlooked or pigeon-holed into specific niches.
Who wants to be called “The Black or African designer…”? Why not just DESIGNER?
While there is still progress to be made, it is encouraging to see more diverse designers being given a chance to shine in the world of haute couture.
